Are you a Canadian educator with a passion for history? Do you want to better prepare your students to confront antisemitism and hatred in today’s society?
The Holocaust was a defining element of Hitler’s Second World War. It stands out among other horrors of history because of the systematic extermination methods that the Nazis and their collaborators employed against Jews and others whom they considered unworthy of life.
In partnership with the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba and the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, this 15-day professional development tour for educators will explore Holocaust memorial sites in Poland, Austria, and Germany, thus equipping teachers to guide their students through the study of a seminal event in the development of modern human rights. Running from 14-28 July 2025, the tour includes visits to the site of the Warsaw Ghetto; the preserved camps at Auschwitz, Birkenau, Majdanek, and Mauthausen; the Jewish districts in Krakow and Vienna; the euthanasia centre at Hartheim; Berchtesgaden and the Obersalzburg, and more.
The tour will be led by Dr. Jody Perrun and Mr. Kelly Hiebert. Dr. Perrun has led numerous Holocaust and military history tours in Europe, and brings 18 years’ experience teaching about military history, the Holocaust, and antisemitism at the university level. Mr. Hiebert has won the 2021 Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching and the 2023 Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence, and with his students produced the 2022 documentary film Truth Against Distortion, which presents the experiences of Winnipeg Holocaust survivors.
Educators may qualify for subsidies to defray the costs of the program, but non-educators are also welcome to apply. For more information or to apply, visit https://mbholocaustinitiative.wordpress.com/apply/.

custom tour planning and design
Do you have an idea for a custom group tour or looking for a tour director?
I have been designing, planning, and leading tours for history buffs since 2011. I can help you plan an itinerary that strikes the right balance of historical and cultural attractions for groups of any age and interest.
My specialty is planning tours of the battlefields from both World Wars relevant to Canada and accompanying the tour as the resident historian. These tours include such places as Juno Beach, Dieppe, the Somme, Vimy Ridge, and Ypres, etc.
I have also planned and led educational Holocaust tours in Poland, Hungary, Czech, and Germany including important sites like Auschwitz and Treblinka.
I am available for:
general consultation on tour design and detailed itinerary planning
full service custom group tours
historical research, including unit histories and individual military personnel records
I can manage all necessary tour logistics and guide your group on-site, providing interpretation to make history come alive
I have helped many tour participants find family members' war graves. Cemeteries with a personal connection can often be added to tour itineraries, subject to logistical requirements.
